I am back with my Europe diaries and this time its French Riviera. French Riviera is basically south eastern coastline of France on the Mediterranean sea. It has some well known spots like Cannes, Nice, Monaco and Monte Carlo. We stayed at Nice because of two reasons — first, it is almost middle point between Cannes and Monaco so both the places can be visited from here and second, it is cheapest of all near by places. We had 3 nights and 2 days in out kitty to explore French Riviera.

If you are fond of driving you can look for self drive options or you can rely on public transport which is not bad. If you are arriving by air you can check self-drive option at the Airport.

Day 1 : We reached hotel around 4 PM and within 10–15 minutes were ready to explore the Promenade (Promenade des Anglais). Our hotel was just 10 mins walking distance from there. It is a long pathway facing the Mediterranean sea.

The Promenade

The dazzling blue water is mesmerizing. You can enjoy beautiful sights while sitting, walking or even cycling across the Promenade. There are plenty of self-serviced bike rental stations. You can check Vélo Bleu bikes which are affordable. So if you are interested don’t miss the seaside bike ride.

Bike on the Shore

In evening you will see lots of tourist and locals running, cycling and skating.

If you don’t mind rocky beaches, you can get into water. Like for any water body, recommended time for soaking up is before sunset.

There are lot of eating and shopping options available on the other side of the road. When I say shopping, it is mostly souvenir shops and items like — beachwear, towels, mats, slippers etc.

You will get many pizzerias and some Indian restaurants too in nice. Day 1 we had Indian food at Indian Lounge restaurant.

Photography tip : If you want to capture top view of the Nice and its coastline, you can visit Castle of Nice (Colline du Château) which is on a hill. You can take public elevator or trek to reach there. This elevator is operational till 7 PM and entry to the hill closes at 8 PM.

Top view of Nice

Although Promenade is the main tourist spot, there are few other attractions like museums and cathedrals which can be visited as per your interest. We however covered Promenade and Fountain de Soleil which was on our way from hotel to the Promenade.

And because Photos speak a thousand words –
